Open Sky Theatre Microplays

MicroPlays is a series of short digital plays made as a collaboration between Open Sky and some of the UK’s most exciting writers.

Herefordshire theatre company Open Sky have created five new digital microplays that will be released on screens of all sizes, for free, from the 13 October 2020.

All of Open Sky’s work has been developed with and premiered at The Courtyard. This is our 5th project together, but the first digital joint venture.

The writers were asked to address the theme of cultural polarisation, questioning whether our differences have to divide us. The series was the brainchild of Open Sky’s Lisle Turner who directed all the finished plays for camera. The series was shot on location in and around Hereford.

The plays feature a wide range of talent from established names like Julie Hesmondhalgh (Broadchurch, Coronation Street) to a host of rising stars.

The Ceremony by Iman Qureshi is a searingly honest take on non-binary marriage with a twist.

Head Over Wheels by Matilda Ibini is a romantic comedy about dating as a disabled person.

Homework by Emily White a horrifically funny take on climate catastrophe.

The Importance of Being Honest by Tena Štivičić is a dark comedy on workplace prejudice.

Stile by Kate Attwell is a breathless take on the wealth gap set in a field. (Contains offensive language)

All 5 plays are rated 14+ and can be watched free on the Open Sky website. Stile, Head over Wheels, The Ceremony and Homework contain some swearing. You can access interviews with the writers, interviews with the cast, director’s commentaries, behind the scenes photos and more.

The project was conceived and directed by Open Sky’s Lisle Turner, guided and supported by their Artistic Director Claire Coaché and produced by Martina Klich from Wrapt Films. Supported by Arts Council England, Wrapt Films, The Elmley Foundation and Turtle Key Arts.
